PNG Artist Saii Kay Hits Back at Social Media Critics Amid Funding Allegations
Prominent Papua New Guinean artist Saii Kay has fired back at online critics who accused him of misusing public funds during his recent performance at a music festival in the Solomon Islands. The artist labeled the claims as "unfounded and deliberately harmful," dismissing them outright.
The controversy arose after some social media users alleged that the trip, organized by Aelan Riddim for the festival, was financed using taxpayer money. However, Kay refuted these allegations, stating that such accusations are not only misleading but also disregard the struggles artists face in securing governmental backing.

“It’s disheartening to see these baseless comments when, in reality, government support for artists like me is virtually nonexistent,” Kay remarked. “We’ve built our careers through sheer determination and personal sacrifices. To suggest we’re exploiting public resources is both inaccurate and disrespectful to the effort we invest in our work.”
In addition to performing at the festival, Kay revealed that the visit included meaningful interactions with local students, aiming to inspire them to value education and pursue their aspirations. “Our mission was to use music as a tool to motivate young people to study hard and chase their dreams,” he explained. “Music has the ability to uplift spirits and encourage ambition, which is exactly what we hoped to achieve during this tour.”
When addressing critiques about his fashion choices and appearance, Kay acknowledged the feedback but stressed the importance of staying true to himself. “While I appreciate constructive criticism about my style, I refuse to compromise who I am,” he said. “I come from humble roots, and I won’t pretend to be someone else just to appease others. My background defines me, and authenticity is something I hold dear.”
Kay also took the opportunity to call for increased acknowledgment and assistance for Papua New Guinea’s creative sector. “It’s high time our government recognizes the immense contribution artists make to our culture and economy,” he urged. “Instead of ridicule, we deserve encouragement and investment. I take immense pride in my identity and heritage, and I’ll continue to represent it proudly in all that I do.”
Highlighting the untapped potential of the arts to address pressing societal issues, Kay pointed to its role in combating youth unemployment. “The creative industry holds significant promise in bridging the unemployment gap in PNG,” he noted. “Not everyone will become a doctor or lawyer, but there are alternative paths to success, and the arts provide one of those avenues. If I can inspire even ten individuals, that’s ten fewer potential criminals or internet trolls on the streets.”
Despite facing backlash, Saii Kay remains resolute in his dedication to his artistry and continues to champion the growth of Papua New Guinea’s creative community, challenging detractors while advocating for systemic change.
