PNG Marape Warns Politicians Against Interfering in Court Matters
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has cautioned politicians against making public statements that could undermine ongoing court proceedings, emphasizing the need to respect the judicial process.
In response to remarks made by Sinasina-Yongomugl MP Kerenga Kua, Marape stressed that legal matters currently before the courts should not be debated in public forums. He urged leaders to refrain from using judicial cases for political gain, warning that such actions could erode public confidence in the legal system.
The Prime Minister highlighted concerns over certain politicians attempting to manipulate the justice system to serve their interests. He described this as a reckless practice that not only threatens the credibility of the judiciary but also poses risks to social stability. He cautioned against inciting public anger for political advantage, emphasizing that past instances of such actions had led to instability.
Marape reiterated that politicians must not assume the roles of accuser, jury, and judge, reminding leaders to allow the courts to operate independently as mandated by the Constitution. He called on all Papua New Guineans to respect the integrity of the judicial system and refrain from interfering in legal matters.
The Prime Minister further reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that court proceedings remain free from political influence. He stressed that the judiciary, led by the Chief Justice, is fully capable of handling legal cases without external pressure. Politicians, he added, should not attempt to sway judicial decisions through public statements that mislead the people.
Marape concluded by urging leaders to act responsibly, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could have serious consequences. He underscored the importance of allowing due legal processes to take their course, ensuring that justice is served fairly and lawfully.
