China Reaffirms Economic Support for PNG Amid U.S. Trade Tariffs

PORT MORESBY – Despite new trade tariffs introduced by the United States targeting China and Pacific Island nations, Beijing remains optimistic about the future of global trade and economic collaboration, according to its top diplomat in Papua New Guinea.

Chinese Ambassador to PNG, Yang Xiaoguang, said the tariffs would not derail worldwide progress but could instead act as a catalyst for increased economic cooperation among developing countries.

Speaking at a recent event, Yang revealed that bilateral trade between China and PNG has exceeded K17.8 billion, with PNG enjoying a surplus of over K7.5 billion. He praised the strength of the economic relationship and noted that China continues to welcome products from PNG.

Prime Minister James Marape also expressed appreciation for China's ongoing support, saying the Asian giant had always dealt with PNG with "respect, dignity, and fairness," offering valuable platforms for local producers and businesses.

Yang emphasized China's long-term vision for international development through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to build stronger economic ties across Asia, the Pacific, and beyond.

He noted that in the past two decades, developing nations have powered much of the world’s growth, now accounting for more than 40% of global GDP, compared to just 24% four decades ago.

“China is ready to work more closely with PNG and fellow developing countries,” Yang said. “Together, we can shape a global economic system that is more balanced and inclusive.”

He strongly criticized protectionist policies and trade barriers, arguing they are harmful to all sides. “No country wins in a trade war,” he stated. “Cooperation and openness are what drive progress, not isolation.”

Yang also stressed that development should not be monopolized by a few powerful nations. “It’s a fundamental right for every country, not a luxury reserved for the privileged,” he said.

As a major global player, China remains committed to defending the multilateral trading system and encourages dialogue over confrontation. “We do not seek trade conflicts,” Yang said, “but we will not shy away from them if necessary.”

Yang reaffirmed that China would continue to stand with Papua New Guinea and other developing economies, opposing power-based diplomacy and working toward a more just and united global community.
