PNG Opposition Welcomes Sir Peter Ipatas and Noah Kool

Papua New Guinea Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa has officially welcomed Simbu Governor Noah Kool and Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas to the opposition camp, following their decision to abandon the government ranks and align with the opposition ahead of a crucial political week.

Mr. Tomuriesa described the move as a significant step toward national change and revealed that the opposition now holds 19 members. He acknowledged the difficulty MPs face in giving up the benefits of government, but emphasized that the greater task lies in redirecting the nation’s future. “At the end of the day, standing for what’s right is harder than standing for what’s convenient,” he stated.

According to the Opposition Leader, being in opposition is not a dead end. He stressed that the group remains active in national discussions, continues to serve their districts and provinces, and operates with mutual respect despite differing views. He said the shared goal among opposition MPs is to rescue the country from the state it has fallen into over the past six years.

Mr. Tomuriesa also highlighted Sir Peter Ipatas’ wealth of political experience, noting his long-standing role in the formation of multiple governments throughout his career. He said Sir Peter’s shift to the opposition is a strong signal that seasoned leaders are recognizing the country is headed in the wrong direction.

In response to recent rumors, Mr. Tomuriesa clarified that the opposition is not "camping" but is instead holding regular meetings to discuss strategy. He confirmed that the team remains united and focused as they prepare for next Tuesday’s proceedings.

The Opposition Leader concluded by extending an open invitation to other MPs who wish to join the opposition or support their bid for leadership change during the upcoming vote.
