Pope Francis Paves Way for Canonization of PNG’s First Saint

Papua New Guinea is set to celebrate its first Catholic saint, as Pope Francis authorized decrees paving the way for the canonization of Blessed Peter ToRot. The announcement came during a significant move by the Pope, who cleared the path for several causes of canonization on Monday. According to Vatican News, Blessed Peter ToRot, a layman from East New Britain, was martyred for his unwavering faith during a turbulent period in PNG’s history.

Born on March 5, 1912, Blessed Peter ToRot grew up deeply rooted in the Christian faith. His life was marked by acts of charity, humility, and an unyielding commitment to serving the poor and orphans. As a catechist, he played a pivotal role in spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church, even amid great adversity. During the Japanese occupation of PNG in World War II, when missionaries were imprisoned, Blessed Peter continued his pastoral work in secret, fully aware that his actions could cost him his life.

Blessed Peter’s steadfast defense of the sanctity of marriage set him apart during a time of cultural and societal challenges. He openly opposed polygamy, a stance that brought him into conflict with his own family. When his older brother took a second wife, Blessed Peter confronted him, refusing to compromise his beliefs. This act of courage led to his betrayal—he was reported to the authorities by his brother and subsequently sentenced to two months in prison. Tragically, he died there in July 1945, reportedly poisoned while in custody.

His martyrdom earned him recognition from the Vatican, and he was elevated to the status of “Blessed” by Pope St. John Paul II on January 17, 1995, during a historic ceremony in Port Moresby. This beatification marked a significant milestone for the Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea, as it acknowledged ToRot’s sacrifice and unwavering faith.

The legacy of Blessed Peter ToRot continues to resonate with his descendants and the broader Catholic community in PNG. In September last year, three of his grandchildren had the honor of presenting a gift to Pope Francis during the pontiff’s visit to the country. These grandchildren—Peter Senat, Henry Senat, and Elaine Senat—are the children of Rufina, ToRot’s only daughter. Their presence at Apec Haus in Port Moresby symbolized the enduring impact of their grandfather’s life and mission.

As the canonization process moves forward, Blessed Peter ToRot’s story serves as an inspiration not only to Catholics in Papua New Guinea but also to people of all faiths. His courage, humility, and dedication to his beliefs highlight the profound impact one individual can have in the face of immense challenges. With his elevation to sainthood on the horizon, Blessed Peter ToRot’s legacy will forever be etched in the spiritual and cultural fabric of Papua New Guinea.
