Blues Set the Tone with Strong Opening Game Victory in Women's State of Origin

 The New South Wales Blues secured a commanding 32–12 victory over the Queensland Maroons in the opening game of the 2025 Women's State of Origin series at Suncorp Stadium. The match, attended by a record crowd of 26,022, saw the Blues dominate the second half after leading 14–12 at halftime. Key performances came from debutants Jayme Fressard, who scored two tries, and Ellie Johnston, who added a decisive try in the second half. Captain Isabelle Kelly praised Johnston's contribution, highlighting her standout NRLW season .

Blues hooker Keeley Davis alleged she was eye-gouged during a tackle prior to a try by Kelly. The incident was reported to the referee and placed on report, with Romy Teitzel of the Maroons believed to be the player involved. Despite the controversy, the Blues maintained their focus and delivered a dominant performance, with key contributions from players like Simaima Taufa, who earned Player of the Match honors for her defensive efforts .

Blues coach John Strange emphasized the importance of the win but cautioned that the series was not yet decided. Second-rower Kezie Apps echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Queensland's resilience and the need for the Blues to elevate their game in the upcoming matches .

The series continues with Game 2 scheduled for May 15 in Sydney, followed by the final on May 29 in Newcastle. The Blues are eager to capitalize on their strong start and aim to secure the series on home soil.
