Many Japanese Tourists Keen on Visiting PNG but Face Travel Hurdles
Numerous visitors at the World Expo site in Osaka, Japan, have expressed a strong interest in visiting Papua New Guinea, according to Commissioner-General of Section PNG, Gabriel Dusava. However, he revealed that the lack of direct flights and visa-on-arrival options remains a significant deterrent for many Japanese travelers.
Dusava shared these concerns with International Trade and Investment Minister Richard Maru during Maru’s visit to the Expo site this week. He said the beauty, culture, and scenery of PNG had attracted considerable attention, but logistical issues were discouraging potential tourists.

“Many Japanese nationals are eager to visit PNG, but they are held back by the absence of a direct flight between the two countries and the unavailability of visa-on-arrival for Japanese passport holders,” Dusava explained. He also noted a rise in business inquiries from Japan, adding to the urgency of resolving travel issues.
He appealed for the resumption of Air Niugini’s direct service between Port Moresby and Narita, ideally before Papua New Guinea’s National Day celebration on July 22. The program is currently being finalized, with Prime Minister James Marape expected to lead the delegation.
As part of the planned activities, Prime Minister Marape will attend the National Day at the Expo in Osaka and then travel to Tokyo on July 23 to engage with potential investors. Minister Maru stated that Marape would host a reception that includes key Japanese government officials, development agencies such as JICA, and financiers like the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
Maru praised the PNG Expo team for their tireless efforts in promoting the country under challenging circumstances. He described the government’s investment in the Osaka World Expo as a strategic move to strengthen bilateral ties and showcase PNG to global investors.
