The “People’s Balus” marks Air Niugini’s entry into a select group of global operators of the A220. The aircraft type has seen over 900 orders from 24 other airlines, with more than 400 already flying in service worldwide, showcasing its efficiency and popularity.
Air Niugini will receive a total of eleven A220s—three larger A220-300s and eight A220-100s—designed to accommodate 138 and 114 passengers respectively. The modern jets will initially service domestic routes, gradually replacing the older Fokker and Boeing aircraft.
With the A220’s long-range capabilities, Air Niugini is also exploring options to deploy the aircraft on international routes. The planes will feature both Business and Economy seating, complete with free WiFi for in-flight connectivity and entertainment.
Company officials reported that pilot, crew, and engineering teams are undergoing rigorous training in preparation for the aircraft’s arrival. The airline is set to welcome the new “Birds of Paradise” fleet into operation in early September.
