PNG ICAC Refers Senior Officers to Police Over Alleged Misconduct

Papua New Guinea’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has formally referred two of its senior officers to the police for investigation into alleged financial misconduct.

Commissioner Andrew Forbes confirmed that the referral was made after discovering what he described as potentially serious financial irregularities. He added that ICAC would not disclose the identities of the individuals at this stage to protect the integrity of ongoing inquiries.

Forbes stated that the referral was intended to ensure an independent and transparent process, and he appreciated the support of government authorities in managing the situation discreetly and professionally.

Police Commissioner David Manning said he had received the referral and that police had initiated preliminary inquiries in accordance with established procedures.

Manning explained that the referral, which involved possible violations of the Public Finances (Management) Act 1995, was under consideration by the Sensitive Investigations Board.

He added that if the board found sufficient grounds for suspicion of criminal activity, the matter would be forwarded to the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate for further action.

Manning emphasized the Government’s commitment to holding all public institutions accountable, stating that any allegations of misconduct must be dealt with through proper legal channels.
