Marape Government Distances Itself from PNG Opposition Leadership Crisis

Prime Minister James Marape has categorically rejected accusations from former Prime Minister and Ialibu-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill that the government is involved in the ongoing dispute over the Opposition’s leadership. Speaking on Thursday, Marape clarified that the issue lies solely with the Opposition and the Speaker of Parliament, emphasizing that the government has no role in the matter.

Marape Government Distances Itself from PNG Opposition Leadership Crisis

O’Neill had earlier criticized Speaker Job Pomat, blaming him for delays in confirming the Opposition Leader and Deputy Leader. In response, Marape defended the Speaker’s neutrality, stating, “The government does not influence the Speaker’s decisions or the Opposition’s internal processes. The Speaker has simply asked the Opposition to resolve their differences and provide a clear leadership choice.”

Marape described the Opposition’s turmoil as a self-inflicted problem, urging its members to unite and address their leadership issues without externalizing blame. “The Speaker’s role is to ensure parliamentary procedures are followed, not to settle political disputes within the Opposition,” he said, adding that O’Neill’s accusations reflect a lack of cohesion within the Opposition ranks.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to governance, Marape noted that his administration remains focused on national priorities, including preparations for Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary. “While the Opposition grapples with internal chaos, we are working to deliver services to our people,” he stated.

The Prime Minister called on O’Neill and other Opposition MPs to focus on constructive contributions to the nation rather than targeting independent parliamentary institutions. “The Opposition must resolve its leadership issues internally and respect the Speaker’s impartiality,” Marape concluded, reaffirming the government’s dedication to serving Papua New Guinea’s citizens.
