PNG Madang Hospital a Death Trap, Says Former Governor

The Madang Provincial Hospital in Papua New Guinea has been branded a “cemetery” by former Madang governor James Yali, who claims it is no longer a place for healing but a place where people go to die.

Yali expressed serious concern over the deteriorating state of the hospital, citing a critical shortage of medicine, including basic drugs like panadol and amoxycillin. Most patients are given prescriptions to buy their own medicine from pharmacies in town.

According to Yali, the situation has worsened to the point where patients are being turned away due to lack of beds and proper care. Some patients are forced to sleep on the floor, while others return home without treatment and eventually die.

He described the hospital as filthy and unhygienic, with overflowing rubbish and only one working toilet for all inpatients. Other toilets remain closed and require urgent repairs, posing risks to both patients and health workers.

Yali called on the Madang Provincial Health Authority, the Health Secretary, the Health Minister, and Governor Ramsey Pariwa to urgently intervene. He stressed that immediate steps must be taken to fix the system.

He also revealed that two of his relatives were sent away by the hospital and later died. He said he was once told by PHA Board Chairman Dr. Boga Figa that some funds were available for improvements, but the problems persist.

Deputy Board Chairman Young Wadau has joined Yali in calling for immediate government action to address the health crisis at the provincial hospital.
