PNG's airline Air Niugini Embarks on Historic Transformation with Arrival of Airbus A220 Fleet

Air Niugini is undergoing the largest transformation in its 50-year history, as it prepares to introduce eleven new Airbus A220 aircraft as part of a US$700 million re-fleeting initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, operational efficiency, and customer service across Papua New Guinea and the region.

Chief Executive Officer Gary Seddon made the announcement at the 40th Australia PNG Business Forum & Trade Expo held last week at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby. Speaking during a State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) roundtable, Mr. Seddon outlined the airline’s 2025–2027 Corporate Plan, highlighting the delivery of new aircraft, financial stability, staff development, and system upgrades as key priorities.

The first Airbus A220 is scheduled to arrive by September 2025, replacing 65 percent of the existing fleet within four years. The modern jets are capable of landing at current domestic airports and servicing select international destinations. “This upgrade could catalyse economic activity and social development across the country,” Mr. Seddon said. “Our pilot, engineering, and cabin crew teams are progressing well with comprehensive training to ensure a seamless transition.”

Air Niugini’s re-fleeting program is also being supported by a focus on digital transformation and performance monitoring tools, helping the airline respond to challenges such as rising fuel costs and increased demand. Mr. Seddon emphasized the importance of building internal capacity and strengthening the airline’s contribution to tourism, trade, and national development.

While welcoming the fleet upgrade, Mr. Seddon noted the need for parallel investments in airport infrastructure. He acknowledged ongoing efforts by the National Airports Corporation (NAC), the PNG Government, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to improve runways, lighting systems, and navigational aids. “Modern infrastructure is key to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable air travel for our people,” he added.
