All PNG Domestic Airports Ready for Airbus A220: Seddon
Air Niugini CEO Gary Seddon has confirmed that all 15 major domestic airports in Papua New Guinea are capable of accommodating the airline’s incoming Airbus A220 aircraft. The announcement follows a detailed pavement compatibility study conducted by Airbus.
Mr. Seddon stated that both models of the A220—the A220-100 and A220-300—can safely land and take off at all airports currently serviced by the Fokker 70 and 100 aircraft. “This is great news for passengers, as the A220 offers greater comfort, efficiency, and reliability,” he said.

The findings, which have been shared with the National Airports Corporation and other stakeholders, will support Air Niugini’s fleet transition beginning in September. The airline plans to phase out its aging Fokker aircraft, which have become increasingly expensive and difficult to maintain.
While most airports can support full A220 operations, Seddon explained that a few routes with shorter or lower-strength runways may require flight adjustments. These restrictions will be minor and temporary, he said, and will not compromise safety or service standards.
The airports able to handle the A220 include Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Rabaul, Madang, Wewak, and others. All international routes currently operated by Fokker and Boeing aircraft will also be compatible with the A220.
Seddon described the fleet upgrade as a long-awaited milestone for PNG aviation, adding that the modernization will reduce costs and improve flight punctuality.
