PNG Parliament Debates Social Media Monetization

The issue of monetizing digital content was raised in Parliament today, with Northern Governor Gary Juffa urging the government to help Papua New Guinean youth earn income from platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

Juffa noted that while YouTube allows monetization in PNG, other popular platforms do not. He said the country's youth are missing out on a global industry because of outdated regulations and lack of proper frameworks.

“Our young people are creating powerful content, but they’re unable to turn it into income. Meanwhile, foreign content creators profit from showcasing PNG,” Juffa said.

He told Parliament that approximately 60 percent of the population is under 25 and active on social media, representing a missed economic opportunity.

Acting ICT Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr. responded by stressing the need for coordination across multiple departments, including Justice, Police, and Treasury.

He said the government is addressing key areas such as cybersecurity and anti-money laundering to lay the foundation for monetization.

Tsiamalili assured that the Marape-Rosso Government supports digital entrepreneurship and aims to establish legal mechanisms to help local creators thrive online.
