Commander Wagambie Jr. to Spearhead PNG Highlands Counter-Terrorism Mission

PNG Police Commissioner David Manning has announced the appointment of Commander Anthony Wagambie Jr. to lead a strengthened joint security operation targeting rising threats in Papua New Guinea’s Highlands region. The move underscores the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach toward acts of terrorism and violence.

Manning confirmed that the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) have expanded their presence in the upper Highlands, with increased patrols and coordinated investigative work already under way. He said an experienced operational leader was needed to guide these efforts on the ground.

“Commander Wagambie has today been recommissioned and assigned to spearhead the operational command against these acts of terrorism,” Manning said, highlighting Wagambie’s extensive policing experience and proven leadership in complex operations.

As operation commander, Wagambie will oversee police and defence teams to ensure the rule of law is enforced and communities remain safe. Manning noted that protecting innocent men, women and children is the top priority of the joint task force.

The Police Commissioner stressed that anyone attempting to destabilise the region will face swift action. “Our security forces are meeting the government’s directive of zero tolerance for those who terrorise our communities,” he said.

Authorities indicated that further updates on the progress of the Highlands security operation will be provided as circumstances allow.
