Sir Gibbs made the remarks following the swearing-in of Justice Graham Ellis at Government House, noting that the facility represents a technological improvement for the justice system. He said the digital setup would allow judges to conduct proceedings simultaneously, easing delays currently caused by courtroom shortages.
“At present, judges must wait for their turn to preside, which often leads to delays,” Sir Gibbs explained. “With the new system, all judges will be able to sit at the same time.”
The Chief Justice added that the electronic processes would reduce reliance on paper and improve overall efficiency in judicial work. He said this upgrade was expected to boost performance and help address long-standing backlogs in cases, which have continued to rise since independence.
Sir Gibbs stressed the importance of performance indicators to track progress in case dispositions. He also said the investment in a modern court facility lifted the standing of the judiciary as well as the legal profession.
He urged judges and lawyers to work together to deliver professional and timely services to the people, noting that access to justice was central to the work of the courts.
