“Hello Poro” Campaign Promotes Friendship, Culture, and Travel Across PNG
Papua New Guinea’s Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) has launched the “Hello Poro” tourism campaign alongside the 50th Independence Anniversary tour packages as part of efforts to promote tourism and encourage more in-country travel.
Chief Executive Officer Eric Mossman Uvovo said the initiative was aimed at strengthening PNG’s tourism brand, supporting local SMEs, inspiring visitor engagement, and motivating Papua New Guineans to explore their own country. He explained that “Poro” in Tok Pisin means “friend,” symbolising the campaign’s focus on friendship, connection, and the welcoming spirit of Papua New Guineans.
According to Uvovo, the “Hello Poro” campaign will feature cinematic storytelling and authentic cultural experiences that highlight nature, culture, coastal adventures, urban vibrancy, and heritage. As part of the initiative, the TPA also introduced 10 four-day tour packages to mark the 50th anniversary celebrations.
The tour packages are subsidised by 50 per cent through government support, making them more affordable for families and groups to travel across the country. Uvovo said the subsidies were designed to open opportunities for more locals to appreciate PNG’s natural and cultural diversity.
TPA has partnered with several operators in the campaign, including Trans Niugini Tours, Buna Treks, Paiya Tours, Bougainville Experience, PNG Tour Guide, Karanas Comfort Tours, Pero Pero Ltd, Niugini International Tours, Tumbuna Bilas Tours, Vilink Tours and Expedition, and Air Niugini.
He confirmed that Air Niugini would provide special discounted rates for travellers under the anniversary tour packages. “These initiatives represent more than just tourism products. They are an investment in the long-term growth of PNG tourism, in creating pride, and in connecting us more deeply with our culture and our communities,” Uvovo stated.
Uvovo further expressed confidence that the campaign would drive more visitation during and beyond the Independence period, enhance visibility for SMEs, promote engagement with PNG’s culture and history, and firmly position the country as a safe, friendly, and unforgettable destination.
