SP PNG Hunters Exit Hostplus Cup Finals after 32-12 defeat

The SP PNG Hunters have bowed out of the Hostplus Cup finals after falling 32-12 to the Redcliffe Dolphins in Redcliffe on Saturday. The home side’s fast-paced attack and superior finishing proved decisive in the knockout clash.

The Dolphins wasted no time, with early tries to Sheldon Pitama, Will Partridge, Dantoray Lui, and Josh Allen setting the tone. Partridge also added four conversions to his tally, while Max Feagai and William Dobson scored in the second half to seal the result.

The Hunters worked hard to stay in the contest, with Douglas David grabbing a double and Sanny Wabo also finding the line. However, missed conversions left the PNG side trailing, and their chances slipped further when Joshua Lau was sent off in the 65th minute.

Leading 22-4 at the break, the Dolphins maintained their composure and discipline, ensuring the Hunters were kept at bay. Despite their efforts, the Hunters could not turn opportunities into points in the crucial stages of the game.

The defeat ends the Hunters’ 2025 finals run, but the squad will take valuable experience from the campaign. With young players stepping up, there are positive signs for a stronger return in the 2026 season.
