PNG ICSA Leads Major Operation to Deport Over 100 Illegal Foreign Miners in Morobe

Papua New Guinea’s Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority (ICSA) has carried out one of its largest operations this year, confirming the arrest and extraction of 105 foreign nationals allegedly engaged in illegal alluvial mining in Morobe Province.

The suspects, all from one country, were apprehended during a coordinated dawn operation conducted by Immigration officers and Police along the Sambio River in Wau-Waria District. The joint enforcement action followed weeks of intelligence monitoring.

Chief Migration Officer Wellington Navasivu said the group was transported to Port Moresby today (October 29), where they are now in immigration detention awaiting administrative processing for deportation.

He revealed that the individuals had violated multiple sections of the Migration Act and the Employment of Non-Citizens Act by working without permits, operating in unauthorized areas, and providing false details to authorities.

Mr. Navasivu confirmed that the detained individuals will be removed from the country once administrative procedures are completed, adding that their names will be placed on the immigration alert list.

“We will ensure the individuals are placed on alert and will not return,” Mr. Navasivu stated. “The company and their sponsors who brought them into the country will be held responsible and necessary administrative and compliance charges will apply.”

The ICSA reaffirmed that it remains steadfast in enforcing Papua New Guinea’s immigration laws and ensuring all foreign nationals operate within the legal framework of the country.
