The match capped off a day of celebration for rugby league fans, with four games played as part of the annual PM’s XIII festival. The atmosphere reached its peak when fans witnessed the official unveiling of the country’s new NRL team name — the PNG Chiefs, who are set to enter the competition in 2028.

On the field, Trai Fuller was the star performer, crossing the try line four times for Australia in a standout display that earned him player of the match honours. Supported by Mitch Moses and Jayden Campbell, Fuller’s speed and timing caused constant trouble for the home side.

For PNG, Epel Kapinias and Dudley Dotoi were the try scorers, while captain Nene Macdonald led with strong carries, tallying over 120 metres and nearly pulling off a spectacular 40-20 kick that would have lifted the crowd even higher.

Despite the loss, PNG’s performance drew praise for its effort and intensity. Australia’s coach commended the hosts for their passion and physical play, saying the match showcased the spirit of rugby league in the Pacific.

As fans left the stadium, the talk was not of defeat but of pride — and of what lies ahead when the PNG Chiefs take the field in the NRL.
