PNG Prime Minister Meets Trump at UN to Mark 50 Years of US Ties

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape held a historic meeting with former United States President Donald J. Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Papua New Guinea and the United States, highlighting the two nations’ commitment to deepening their partnership.

Marape said the discussions reflected ongoing cooperation under the Framework for Strategic Cooperation, which focuses on strengthening security, driving economic growth, and enhancing people-to-people connections.

He noted that the foundation being built today would shape the relationship for the next 50 years, describing the US as an important ally sharing common values and aspirations with Papua New Guinea.

“Our nations cherish a shared history, shared values, and a shared future,” Marape said, adding that both countries were working together to promote peace, prosperity, and a free and open Pacific region.
