PNGNRLC Welcomes Madang-Based Kandes RFLC for 2026 Season

The Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) has unveiled its 12-team lineup for the 2026 season, with the Madang-based Kandes Rugby Football League Club (RFLC) joining the competition for the first time.

The entry of the Kandes RFLC marks a new era for rugby league in PNG, reflecting the league’s continued push to grow the sport across all regions and strengthen its talent pathway system. PNGNRLC said the new club met all necessary compliance standards to secure its participation.

Meanwhile, the Kimbe Cutters will not feature in next year’s competition after the board decided against renewing their license. PNGNRLC Chairman Adrian Chow thanked the Cutters for their years of contribution and said the league hopes to assist their eventual return once conditions are fulfilled.

“The board reached a tough decision, but it was based on consistent application of our licensing requirements,” Chow said. “We remain committed to helping the Cutters work toward a future comeback.”

General Manager Tony Archer explained that all clubs undergo yearly assessments to ensure compliance with key performance benchmarks. “This process isn’t about exclusion but about progress,” Archer said. “Our aim is to ensure every club meets the standards required for a professional national competition.”

PNGNRLC emphasized that the same review process was applied to all 12 clubs, with feedback provided to guide their future development. The move aligns with the league’s long-term vision of building sustainable and competitive teams throughout the country.

With the addition of the Kandes RFLC and ongoing reforms to strengthen club management, PNGNRLC said the 2026 season will deliver exciting matchups and reinforce Papua New Guinea’s proud reputation as a rugby league-loving nation.
