O’Neill said the Prime Minister had resorted to emotional political attacks rather than addressing issues such as empty hospital shelves, a weakening Kina and a national debt that has continued to climb. He said ordinary citizens were feeling the impact of poor management and deserved answers instead of repeated blame-shifting.
According to O’Neill, the government’s attempts to portray him as the source of national problems had failed to convince the public. He said no commission of inquiry or police investigation had ever substantiated claims made about his leadership.
He defended his record, saying his pathway into politics was grounded in business and education, not short cuts or dependence on public servants. O’Neill said that under his government, real economic benefits were felt at the household level, unlike the current period marked by stagnation.
O’Neill questioned why Marape had remained silent throughout the former government’s tenure if he truly believed the past policy direction was harmful. He argued that the Prime Minister was now attempting to rewrite history for political convenience.
He said leadership demanded humility and accountability, calling for the Prime Minister to allow a Vote of No Confidence to proceed. O’Neill ended his remarks with a pointed warning: “If not, you will only ever be remembered as a coward who plunged our country into the darkest period in our history.”
