PNG Football Fans Urged to Rally as MSG Cup Reaches Semi-Finals

PNG football supporters are being urged to fill the stands in Port Moresby as the MSG Prime Ministers Football Cup enters its semi-final stage following the completion of all pool matches. The knockout round begins tomorrow, marking a crucial week for both the men’s and women’s teams.

The women’s matches will kick off at the Sir John Guise Stadium, where PNG Gold advanced top of their pool after a 4–0 win over Vanuatu. They now prepare to face the Solomon Islands, who secured second place despite a narrow 2–1 loss to the Fiji Kulas yesterday. The Kulas, unbeaten in their group, will take on Vanuatu in the other women’s semi-final.

Coach Angeline Chua said sharpening their attack remains vital for Fiji ahead of the knockout fixtures.

“One of the main areas we need to work on is our finishing. If we can get that right, we can perform much better than how we are performing right now,” she said.

The men’s division continues on Thursday at the PNG Football Stadium. PNG Gold (Kapuls) will battle Fiji, while Vanuatu faces the Solomon Islands after strong showings in the final round of pool matches. Kapuls coach David Muta will again rely on captain Raymond Gunemba and his senior group as PNG attempts to defend its title on home soil.

Both PNG Red development teams bowed out early, but coaches Susan Steven and Harrison Kamake praised their squads for their competitive efforts against senior national sides from across the region.

The PNG Football Association called on the public to show strong support in the stands.

“SEMIFINALS ARE HERE! The MSG Prime Minister’s Cup heads into the knockout stage — come and back your team as they fight for a spot in the final! Tickets: Outer Stand – K5, Grandstand – K10, Students (with ID) – K2, Kids Under 12 – FREE. Bring the colours, bring the noise. See you at the Sir John Guise Stadium tomorrow for the Women's Semi-finals and PNG Football Stadium on Thursday for the Men's Semi-finals!”
