PNG launches long-term tourism roadmap with new National Policy
Papua New Guinea formally unveiled its National Tourism Policy 2025–2045 during a ceremony at APEC Haus in Port Moresby, marking a major step in shaping the country’s tourism future. The announcement on November 18 came after more than a year of extensive consultations nationwide, bringing together views from government agencies, private sector operators, non-government organizations, academics and community groups.

The policy is the outcome of a review of the 1995 National Tourism Policy, supported by the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI), an Asian Development Bank program delivered in partnership with Australia and New Zealand. A comprehensive review conducted in December 2022 was followed by regional forums, stakeholder interviews and the development of an Issues Paper to guide the drafting process.
By December last year, a national validation workshop was held, leading to months of technical vetting before the National Executive Council endorsed the final policy in August 2025. The new strategy lays out the long-term vision for a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to tourism growth and community benefit.
Central to the 20-year plan are fifteen policy areas, grouped under environmental sustainability, cultural protection, community empowerment, inclusive economic growth and resilience. Additional areas include governance, destination development, industry standards, workforce training, visitor safety and the strengthening of air connectivity.
TPA Chief Executive Officer Eric Mossman Uvovo described the policy as a landmark achievement, saying it sets out a clear direction for the sector. “The launch of the National Tourism Policy marks a new chapter in our tourism journey as a nation.”
“This policy provides the strategic direction needed to position PNG as a leading nation in tourism, a country that celebrates its rich cultural diversity, pristine natural environment, and authentic adventure experiences.”
