PNG MP Tells PM Marape: ‘Show the Country Where the Money Went’

PNG Opposition MP James Nomane has intensified pressure on Prime Minister James Marape, urging him to release full expenditure reports so the country can see how the K28.4 billion 2025 budget was actually spent. He said Papua New Guineans deserve to know which districts, provinces, companies and sectors received public money throughout the year.

Nomane said the government’s repeated emphasis on DSIP and PSIP allocations hides the broader reality of national spending. While districts such as Chuave and Tari-Pori each received K8 million in 2025, those payments represent only K1.5 billion in total—barely 5.2 per cent of the overall budget. He said the remaining K26 billion remains unaccounted for at the community level.

According to Nomane, ministries and departments are absorbing billions in policy funds, leaving districts and provinces with little support for service delivery. He said this imbalance is weakening development outcomes and creating deeper inequality across the country. “Most districts struggle with under K10 million while departments receive massive allocations,” he said.

Nomane said key fiscal documents, including the MYEFO and FBO, provide only high-level figures and fail to disclose which companies and consultants were paid from the IFMS Vendor Payment List. “People want to know who got the money and where they worked,” he said, adding that the K1.6 billion Connect PNG allocation must be broken down by contractor and project location.

He also reminded the government that Section 3(2) of the Public Finance Management Act requires quarterly expenditure reports. He said the Prime Minister’s position that these figures will only be revealed at the end of the year contradicts the law and undermines transparency.

Nomane said public funds must be managed openly and with accountability, stressing that transparency is the foundation of fair development across all provinces. “Only through open reporting can we achieve equity, inclusivity, and genuine development for all districts and provinces,” he said.
