PNG Opposition Seeks Supreme Court Order to Enforce No-Confidence Motion

Papua New Guinea Deputy Opposition Leader and Chuave MP James Nomane has lodged an urgent application in the Supreme Court to enforce a Motion of No Confidence against Prime Minister James Marape. The case, filed under Section 18 of the Constitution (SCA 13 of 2025), challenges the decision of the Private Business Committee—chaired by Speaker Job Pomat—to reject the motion after it had been approved for inclusion on the Parliamentary Notice Paper.

Nomane accused the Speaker of violating the Constitution and compromising the independence of Parliament, saying such actions have weakened democratic principles in the country. He said the Speaker should step down for failing to uphold the law and for allegedly allowing executive influence to override parliamentary processes.

The Opposition MP believes the Supreme Court will move swiftly to recall Parliament so that the motion can be debated. He argued that the current government has led Papua New Guinea into “socio-economic regression,” citing shortages of medicines, rising crime, poor education standards, and widespread unemployment.

Nomane also criticized the 2025 National Budget, saying it had failed to address the country’s pressing needs, much like the 2024 Budget. He said excessive borrowing had raised national debt to K65 billion, warning that this path was “unprecedented and unsustainable.”

He further claimed that under Marape’s leadership, Papua New Guinea had lost K56 billion in potential development benefits, accusing the government of promoting “crony capitalism and misappropriation.” Nomane said these issues justified the need for immediate change through a vote of no confidence.

He urged citizens to hold their MPs accountable, saying the vote would represent a defining moment for the country’s future. “Make no mistake, this is the vote of no confidence to save PNG,” Nomane said.
