Speaking at the launch, Mr Marape commended the NCDC, the Moresby South leadership team and local partners for delivering a facility that supports the Government’s push for inclusive development, family wellbeing and tourism growth.
“Konebada Recreational Park is more than just a project – it is a symbol of partnership and progress,” he said. “This shows what can be achieved when government and communities work together to create spaces that bring joy to families, support small businesses and highlight PNG’s natural beauty.”
The Prime Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that improves living standards and strengthens the country’s image as a tourism and investment destination.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop, who attended the launch, said the park aligns with his long-running “Safe, Clean, Healthy and Active City” campaign aimed at transforming the capital into one of the Pacific’s most liveable cities.
Mr Marape also acknowledged the Governor’s leadership, noting that projects such as Konebada Recreational Park continue to provide lasting benefits to families, communities and the tourism sector.
Located near the Konebada Petroleum Park and the Moresby South coastal stretch, the new recreational facility is expected to become a hub for family outings, cultural festivals, fitness activities and tourism-related events.
Local SMEs are also expected to benefit from increased foot traffic and new opportunities in hospitality, retail and cultural services. Features of the park include landscaped gardens, walkways, shaded picnic spots, cycling tracks and open spaces for public events.
Built with emphasis on environmental sustainability and public accessibility, the development reflects PNG’s growing capability to deliver modern recreational and tourism infrastructure while maintaining natural heritage.
As families gathered to enjoy the afternoon of entertainment and activities to mark the opening, both the Prime Minister and the Governor highlighted that Moresby South is setting a new benchmark for community-driven development and national pride.
