Fibre network remains backbone of internet in PNG – DataCo

Papua New Guinea’s internet system continues to rely heavily on fibre optic cables, despite the growing presence of satellite-based services across the country, according to PNG DataCo.

The state-owned wholesale operator says fibre infrastructure remains the main channel through which internet traffic flows to mobile operators, internet providers and businesses nationwide. While satellite services are expanding access, they are designed to complement rather than replace the fibre backbone.

PNG DataCo chief executive Paul Komboi said recent public discussions suggesting that satellite technology could take over the role of fibre networks do not reflect how national connectivity systems actually operate.

He explained that major infrastructure such as the Coral Sea Cable and the Kumul Submarine Cable Network form the foundation of Papua New Guinea’s international and domestic data transmission, supporting high-capacity and stable connectivity.

Mr Komboi said satellite services play an important role in reaching remote and isolated communities, especially where fibre rollout is difficult due to terrain and distance. However, those satellite systems still rely on fibre connections to link into global networks.

He added that DataCo continues to engage with low-earth orbit satellite operators as part of efforts to strengthen network resilience and expand coverage across the country.

“Satellite services support access, but the backbone of PNG’s connectivity will continue to be fibre,” Mr Komboi said.
