PNG Daru Airport Closed to Flights After Hard Landing Incident

Flight operations at PNG's Daru Airport were disrupted after a Cessna 188 aircraft was involved in a runway incident that prompted the issuing of a NOTAM. The incident occurred on Friday, December 19, shortly after the aircraft arrived from Horn Island.

According to the National Airports Corporation, the aircraft made a hard landing at approximately 8.30am, causing its front right wheel to collapse and leaving the plane disabled at the edge of Runway 14.

Only the pilot was on board the aircraft at the time of the incident, and NAC confirmed there were no injuries. However, the force of the landing resulted in damage to the runway pavement at the point of contact.

NAC said the runway will remain closed until inspections and repairs are completed, with safety checks being carried out as a priority. The Accident Investigation Commission has since approved the removal of the aircraft from the runway area.

Aircraft recovery works will be followed by pavement repairs to restore the runway to operational condition before flight services resume.

Mr Kaumu said passengers affected by the disruption should remain in contact with airlines for updated schedules, stating, “We urge travellers to liaise directly with their airlines while we work to restore safe operations.”
