Media Council President Mr Nevil Choi spoke after police confirmed that the journalist was arrested on Sunday afternoon, December 28, at Five Mile along Kanage Street.
According to National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab, police officers found the journalist drinking alcohol by the roadside at around 2.30pm. When approached, he resisted arrest, leading officers to use reasonable force before taking him into custody.
The journalist was later charged after sobering up and was taken to Boroko Police Station, where he was allowed to post bail.
Mr Choi said the incident should serve as a reminder that professionalism goes beyond newsroom work and extends to personal behaviour in public spaces.
He said the Media Council continues to promote ethical journalism and respect for the law, noting that public confidence in the media depends largely on the conduct of those working in the profession.
Mr Choi also acknowledged that many journalists across the country contribute positively to their communities and work hard to maintain public trust despite increasing scrutiny.
“Journalists are no different from ordinary citizens. Laws are laws. If you break the law and you are caught, you must face the law. As journalists, we report on accountability, so we must also be accountable ourselves.”
