PNG Porgera Mine Losing About K370 Million in Gold Each Year
Papua New Guinea’s Porgera gold operation is losing an estimated K370 million worth of gold every year as illegal miners continue to access restricted areas of the mine.
The operator, New Porgera Mining Limited, says around 20,000 ounces of gold are taken annually from within the Special Mining Lease, based on assessments carried out before the mine resumed operations.

Company officials say security teams face constant pressure from large groups of unlicensed miners who enter the site, often threatening workers and damaging equipment while extracting gold.
Industry leaders warn the ongoing situation puts both employees and illegal miners at serious risk, with unstable tunnels and unsafe digging methods posing a danger to lives.
The Papua New Guinea Chamber of Resources and Energy has raised concerns that illegal mining is not only draining revenue but also undermining lawful small-scale miners who operate within the rules.
Prime Minister James Marape has previously acknowledged the growing number of illegal miners entering the Porgera valley and said police and defence forces remain on the ground to maintain order and protect key infrastructure.
