The new recruits have spent the past 12 weeks immersed in a program designed to prepare them for real emergencies—from medical and trauma incidents to psychological crises. The course blended academic sessions with scenario-based exercises, fitness drills, advanced emergency driving and teamwork development, ensuring each graduate is ready for the challenges of the job.
CEO Kai Tane said the new officers represent St John’s continued commitment to improving emergency care across PNG. He noted that their training equips them to stabilise patients, provide critical care and respond confidently in high-pressure situations. Their next step is a nine-month supervised placement, where they will work alongside seasoned officers in both metropolitan and remote communities.
The group includes representation from across the country: eleven from the National Capital District and thirteen from various provinces, including Central, Mt Hagen, East New Britain, Lae and Unggai-Bena. St John says this spread reflects its mandate to serve all Papua New Guineans, regardless of location.
The training was made possible through support from ExxonMobil PNG, the Marape-Rosso Government, the National Department of Health Emergency Medicine Office, and the PNG-Australia Policing Partnership, whose assistance has helped St John build long-term training capacity.
In welcoming the graduates, CEO Tane praised their determination. “They are ready to serve the people of Papua New Guinea with professionalism and dedication as they step into their roles as Trainee Ambulance Officers.”
