PNG Uses Sydney Platform to Promote Investment Opportunities

He said PNG must take every opportunity to advertise its potential if it wants to attract serious foreign partners.

Wong highlighted the purpose of PNG Investment Week, saying the gathering in Sydney brought together major players across various industries to demonstrate the country’s capabilities. “We have some of the biggest players from all our industry and resource sector here to show case what Papua New Guinea can offer and to market our country as an investment destination,” he said.
He added that attendance was limited to essential personnel to ensure the event remained focused. “The prime minister has been very strict on who needs to be here, only people who are needed, even four opposition leaders are here in Sydney, because this is an opportunity for us to market the country as investment destination.”
Wong also recognised the leadership of Anthony Smarè, Richard Kassman and the broader PNG Core team for their efforts abroad.
He reiterated that foreign investment drawn from such international engagements would benefit the country well into the future. “There are long term benefits that can come in with foreign investments and it is at such events that we can attract or pull in investors to come to Papua New Guinea to invest or do business,” he said.
Wong added that PNG is asserting tougher standards in its dealings with foreign companies. “A week like this solidifies, that PNG is no longer a doormat and companies must adhere to our laws, policies and regulations, not only for returns of financial windfalls but more importantly how it will be sustainable to protect our future generations.”
