PNG's Largest Hospital to start Cancer Treatment starting 2026

Port Moresby General Hospital is preparing to roll out cancer treatment services in 2026 as part of a long-term plan to strengthen specialised healthcare in Papua New Guinea.

According to hospital management, the Cancer Centre has been designed to be developed in phases, matching the level of funding provided each year by the government. The most recent budget allocated K60 million toward the project.

PMGH Chief Executive Officer Dr Paki Molumi said the release of funds early in 2026 will be critical to allow operations to begin by mid-year. He said the initial phase will focus on chemotherapy and radiotherapy services.

The radiotherapy unit will be equipped with a linear accelerator, offering modern treatment options, while brachytherapy will also be available for selected cancer cases. These services are expected to improve access to care for patients who currently seek treatment overseas.

Dr Molumi said further developments are planned, including the introduction of nuclear medicine services such as PET scans later in 2026 to support accurate diagnosis and monitoring.

Additional upgrades are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, including the installation of another cancer treatment machine. In the longer term, the hospital plans to add immunotherapy and bone marrow transplant services. “Our goal is to build a complete cancer treatment centre that can serve the people of Papua New Guinea under one roof,” Dr Molumi said.
