Police in PNG Capital Crack Down on Wire Catapult Possession, No Bail for Offenders

Public safety concerns in Port Moresby have prompted a firm directive from police, with authorities announcing that anyone caught with a wire catapult will no longer be granted police bail. The warning follows an attempted armed robbery in Port Moresby involving suspects armed with the banned weapon.

NCD and Central Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Turi, confirmed that instructions will be issued immediately to all units under his command. He said the measure is necessary after three men were arrested at Airvos Avenue on Wednesday night while trying to rob undercover officers.

According to ACP Turi, the suspects were travelling in an unmarked vehicle and were armed with a homemade gun, a wire catapult, five arrows and a kitchen knife. The trio was taken into custody and remains in detention.

Turi highlighted that the weapon has caused serious injuries in East Sepik Province and other regions, and its growing use in crimes is a major concern. He said anyone caught manufacturing or carrying wire catapults will face the full process of the law.

“I am calling on the public to report to the police if you see people using wire catapults or producing them. The weapon is very dangerous because if we do not do something about it now, we will regret it later,” ACP Turi said.

He added that the three suspects will not be considered for bail and will appear before the courts once charges are finalised. He urged magistrates to impose tougher penalties to deter others.
