PNG Acting PM Rosso: Evictions Needed to Restore Safety in Port Moresby
PNG authorities are acting to reclaim State land at 2 Mile Hill, with Acting Prime Minister John Rosso saying the eviction is aimed at protecting residents and enforcing the law in Port Moresby.
Mr Rosso said the settlement has existed unlawfully for years and has become a hotspot for criminal behaviour, putting both civilians and police at risk.
He said attacks linked to the area had left innocent people injured and created ongoing security concerns, making government intervention unavoidable.
“This eviction is not happening without reason. It is the direct result of repeated criminal activities and serious threats to public safety. The State has a responsibility to protect law-abiding citizens and restore order,” Mr Rosso said.
He stressed that authorities recognise there are hardworking residents in the area who have not been involved in criminal acts and should not be treated unfairly.
The Acting Prime Minister said NCDC, with backing from Governor Powes Parkop, would assess affected residents and provide resettlement support where appropriate.
At the same time, he encouraged those without employment or legal justification for remaining in the city to return to their villages, where opportunities for community and family support exist.
Mr Rosso said the Government remained committed to planned urban development and pointed to ongoing resettlement projects, including the Farea development being advanced by Moresby North East MP John Kaupa in partnership with the NCD leadership.
He said these initiatives showed that lawful and organised alternatives were possible while restoring order in the city.
“Enough is enough. It is time we protect our law-abiding citizens and make our capital city a place for everyone to live, work and enjoy,” he said.
