PNG AVSEC Officers Intercept Live Ammunition at Port Moresby Airport
PNG aviation security officers stopped a suspected attempt to smuggle ammunition through the Port Moresby International Airport domestic terminal after detecting live rounds during baggage screening.

AVSEC officers found 11 rounds of live ammunition concealed inside a passenger’s check-in luggage during routine checks on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The bag was scheduled to be loaded onto a flight bound for Goroka.

Following the discovery, the suspect was detained and taken to the National Airports Corporation Aviation Security Base for questioning before being transferred to the Seven Mile Airport Police Station for further investigations.

Airport authorities said the interception highlighted the importance of thorough screening procedures at all domestic and international terminals.

The National Airports Corporation said it remains focused on enforcing aviation laws and security measures to prevent restricted items from being carried through PNG airports.

“Our officers acted professionally and decisively, demonstrating that airport security remains a top priority,” NAC said.
