PNG facing tough year as cost pressures hit families — Sir Puka Temu

Papua New Guinea is entering the new year under growing strain as families across the country struggle with rising living costs, crime and limited employment opportunities, veteran statesman Sir Puka Temu has warned.

In a statement issued this week, Sir Puka said many households are finding it harder to make ends meet and are increasingly depending on relatives and community networks to survive where basic services are failing to reach them.

He said the strength of the family unit continues to play a central role in holding society together, helping raise disciplined children and maintaining peace in communities during difficult times.

However, Sir Puka cautioned that family support alone cannot carry the country forward, pointing to ongoing law and order problems, pressure on the health system, declining education standards and a shortage of jobs as issues that now require urgent national attention.

He said these challenges have grown into serious national concerns and must be addressed with practical action rather than political promises.

Sir Puka urged the government to place stronger focus on improving law and order, rebuilding health and education services, and investing in agriculture and manufacturing to create employment and restore confidence in the economy.

He also noted that Prime Minister James Marape’s political stability through to 2027 offers a rare opportunity for firm leadership, saying the public expects delivery on commitments, not rhetoric, adding: “This is a time for honest leadership and unity so our people can face the year ahead with hope.”
