PNG Hela Turns to SMEs in Fight Against Gun Violence

A new development-driven approach is being rolled out in PNG’s Hela Province as Governor Philip Undialu calls on illegal gun holders to surrender their weapons in exchange for business support.

The governor made the announcement during the first Provincial Assembly Meeting of the year on Tuesday in Tari, unveiling a K5 million funding package dedicated to the gun surrender program.

Scheduled to run for two weeks in February, the initiative is designed to steer communities away from violence by helping former gun owners build sustainable livelihoods.

Instead of cash payouts, the provincial government plans to support participants with practical resources to start small businesses, including PMV operations, guesthouses, livestock farming and other income-earning activities.

Governor Undialu said the aim was to provide lasting solutions that reduce conflict while improving household incomes across the province.

He said the program also complements the national position outlined by Police Minister John Pundari, who has made it clear that no cash will be exchanged for illegal firearms during the upcoming surrender exercise.

Governor Undialu urged residents to act voluntarily and take advantage of the opportunity before law enforcement measures intensify under existing legislation.

“We want to engage you in meaningful activities. You may have spent money on these guns, but that investment will be repaid through SME opportunities. Keeping guns only makes you an enemy of the state and will end up hurting you or putting you behind bars,” he said.
