PNG’s Future Depends on Citizen Behaviour, Parkop Tells New Year Crowd

Port Moresby residents have been urged to take personal responsibility for their actions as the country steps into the new year, with National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop calling on citizens to embrace positive living and nation-building.

Speaking during the New Year fireworks celebration at Ela Beach on Wednesday night, Governor Parkop reminded the crowd that Papua New Guinea’s strength lies in its people and their ability to lift the country to higher standards through discipline and good values.

He said one of the challenges for the new year was for citizens to avoid behaviour that leads to conflict, apology or compensation, and instead strive to live in a way that reflects respect for one another and the nation.

Governor Parkop said responsible living contributes directly to safer communities and helps create an environment where families and young people can thrive.

He told those gathered that the current generation has a rare opportunity to reset priorities, set clear goals and take ownership of shaping a better future for the country.

Also attending the event was NCD City Manager Frank Ravu, who acknowledged the cooperation of city residents in maintaining peace and order during the 50th Independence anniversary celebrations.

Ravu thanked the public for working with authorities throughout the milestone year, saying their support played a key role in ensuring safety across the capital.

“We must challenge ourselves to be better citizens. One of the goals we should set is not to create situations where we have to apologise, pay compensation or say sorry,” Governor Parkop said.
