The announcement was made during a visit by Papua New Guinea Football Association President John Kapi Natto, who met the squad — popularly known as the PNG Bilums — and encouraged them ahead of their departure for the regional tournament later this month.
Following weeks of intensive training involving a 40-player provisional squad, the final selection showcases a blend of experienced players and promising young talents expected to represent PNG on the international stage.
Senior players such as Ramona Padio, Marie Rex Aua Kaipu, Yvonne Gabong and Megan Wayom Gunemba have been included to provide leadership, while emerging talents like Ginnimari Wambi, who impressed during last year’s MSG Prime Minister’s Cup with the PNG Women’s Development Team, add youthful energy to the lineup.
Speaking to the players at the academy, Mr Natto highlighted the evolving nature of women’s football and urged younger players to rise to the challenge as the sport continues to grow globally.
“Time is changing. Teams have changed, the women’s teams are changing. The older players are moving on and the new players are coming through,” Natto said.
He also pointed out the competitive structure of the qualifiers, noting that although New Zealand is part of the pathway, PNG must first overcome regional rivals to progress further in the tournament.
“For this qualifier it is different, as New Zealand is participating too. But there is a second spot to the World Cup pathway. You’ve done it before in 2022 when you went on to play Panama in the inter continental playoff,” he said.
Head Coach Ericson Komeng and his technical staff have overseen the camp, placing strong emphasis on fitness, tactical discipline and mental preparation ahead of the competition scheduled from February 27 to March 7.
PNG has been placed in Group B alongside Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia, with the Bilums set to open their campaign against Vanuatu on February 27 before facing Fiji on March 2 and New Caledonia on March 5, aiming for a top-two finish to qualify for the Finals round in New Zealand in April.
