PNG Direct Flights to Japan to Resume with Air Niugini Route in July

Speaking during Japan National Day celebrations in Port Moresby, Japanese Ambassador to PNG Hisanobu Mochizuki said the resumption of the route by Air Niugini would strengthen business engagement and bilateral cooperation between Papua New Guinea and Japan.

He described the direct service as an important step toward deepening economic connections and enhancing partnerships across multiple sectors.

“As Japanese ambassador, I firmly resolved to devote my utmost effort to elevating Japan-PNG economic relations to a higher level, and Air New Guinea’s direct flight to Japan will be a key trigger impetus in this endeavour,” he said.

Ambassador Mochizuki noted that improved air connectivity could stimulate increased business travel, tourism and trade flows, while also creating new market access for PNG exports and high-quality Japanese goods.

He highlighted that Papua New Guinea’s waters already supply nearly 40 per cent of Japan’s tuna and bonito catch, demonstrating the strong existing trade links between the two countries.

“I believe beyond seafood, PNG’s coffee, vanilla, cocoa beans and flowers also represent products with great potential for entering Japanese market,” he said.

The ambassador added that Japan would continue working closely with the PNG Government and relevant agencies to encourage greater Japanese investment in the country.

“We will actively pursue initiatives in cooperation with PNG Government and relevant organisations to encourage the expansion of direct investment from Japan to PNG.”
