“The tourism sector touches many parts of our economy, and its growth depends on collaboration between government, industry players, and local communities,” Uvovo said.
The reform process will involve nationwide consultations in four regions, allowing input from diverse stakeholders before finalising the legal framework guiding the sector.
Ingrid Kuman, Executive Manager for Policy and Strategic Planning, said the reforms are aligned with the National Tourism Policy 2025-2045, which outlines strategies for sustainable growth and stronger institutional frameworks.
She added, “The sector has changed tremendously since 1995, especially with digital transformation, new markets, and post-pandemic recovery. We need legislation that reflects these shifts.”
Tourism arrivals surpassed 130,000 in 2025, with Australia remaining the primary market. Kuman said the policy focuses on sustainable development, investment growth, improved standards, and community benefits to make tourism a key economic driver for PNG.
