Prime Minister James Marape announced the confirmation while speaking from Dubai, saying the seven-year lead-up gives Papua New Guinea ample time to prepare and present itself as a stronger and more competitive nation on the global stage.
He described the opportunity as a milestone for the country, coming 15 years after PNG successfully delivered APEC 2018, which placed the nation in the international spotlight.
The Prime Minister said the government formally expressed interest to host APEC again, aiming to build on the experience gained in 2018 and align preparations with the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary in 2035.
He said his visit to Dubai forms part of wider diplomatic and economic engagements ahead of APEC 2033, including the appointment of Papua New Guinea’s Ambassador to Dubai, Frank Assi, and efforts to strengthen trade connections with the Middle East and Europe.
Prime Minister Marape said PNG’s geographic position places it at the crossroads of the Pacific, ASEAN and APEC economies, creating opportunities to act as a bridge between major global markets.
“Our intention is to link the Middle East with the Far East, where we are located, through our diplomatic presence here in Dubai, alongside our missions in Israel and Europe, to open markets, financing opportunities, and trade pathways for our producers,” he said.
