Preparing for 2027 Elections: PNG Social Democratic Party Chooses New Leadership Team
PNG’s Social Democratic Party has elected a new national executive as it begins preparations for the 2027 National General Election, following a special convention held in Port Moresby.
The meeting, staged at the Stanley Hotel, was supervised by election officials from the PNG Electoral Commission and witnessed by representatives from the Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates. Sixteen accredited delegates from across the country took part in the voting process.
Businessman John Makop was elected president unopposed after four other nominees formally withdrew from the race before the ballot. His elevation places him at the forefront of the party’s push toward the next national polls.
Paul Kintip of the Western Highlands branch secured the vice presidency with a commanding 14 votes. Gabriel Kotona retained his position as General-Secretary after being returned unopposed by the delegates.
The treasurer’s seat was contested by three nominees, with Sengol Parkop emerging victorious with 10 votes. Interim treasurer Rex Wellin received six votes in the tally.
Party Leader and National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop congratulated the newly elected and returning executives, while acknowledging the efforts of the outgoing officials in strengthening the party’s foundations. He urged the new team to intensify their work at the provincial level and win parliamentary seats to enhance the party’s national standing.
Governor Parkop said the 2027 election would centre on presenting alternative policies, ideas and convictions to the people, stressing that the party’s “SDP We Deliver” identity continues to focus on service delivery and human rights advocacy.
