PNG Citizens Told to Avoid Middle East Travel Amid Escalating Conflict

Papua New Guinea nationals have been strongly advised to defer any travel to the Middle East as war spreads across parts of the Gulf and neighbouring Arab states.

In a statement released by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Secretary Elias Wohengu described the situation as volatile, warning that access routes in several countries have been sealed.

Airspace closures and border shutdowns have left thousands unable to move, raising concern for foreign nationals, including Papua New Guineans, caught in the unfolding crisis.

Mr Wohengu said evacuation attempts would be unsafe under the current conditions.

“Many governments are unable to carry out evacuation exercises at this point, as all land borders and airspace are closed, and evacuation itself would pose serious security risks under the present war scenario,” the statement said.

The department acknowledged the distress faced by families back home and confirmed that support services remain available through its State Protocol and Consular Division. Relatives can make contact by phone on 301 41 15 or by emailing consular.affairs@dfa.gov.pg

.Authorities within the region, he added, have instructed humanitarian providers to extend assistance to stranded third-country nationals, including PNG citizens.

The department assured the public it will continue tracking developments and provide further updates while urging those in affected areas to remain cautious and comply with directives issued by host governments.
