Six suspects have now been apprehended and are being detained in Wewak as investigations intensify.

East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari said the arrests were the result of a coordinated effort between police and military personnel targeting communities in Makun, Malasi and nearby areas believed to be harbouring those responsible.

The Friday night attack saw a group of armed men invade the airport grounds, vandalise facilities and steal equipment. The violence led to the indefinite suspension of airport operations.

According to police, the suspects were carrying wire catapults and arrows and attempted to flee towards Brandi during the security sweep.

Superintendent Tamari dismissed suggestions that the unrest was connected to land disputes, stating it was a criminal act.

“These were opportunistic criminals who took advantage of a security breach,” he said.

He further revealed that more individuals have been identified and additional arrests are expected. “We will not rest until the main perpetrators are captured,” he said.
