PNG University Student Targeted After Parliament Debate, Minister Says

A young University of Papua New Guinea student has come under intense online scrutiny following claims raised in Parliament, prompting Defence Minister Dr. Billy Joseph to call for caution.

Addressing the House, Dr. Joseph criticised Rainbo Paita for circulating information he said was not verified and warned that spreading such material could escalate cyber harassment. “We must not use this Honourable House to circulate unsubstantiated information that ends up destroying the lives of innocent people,” he added.

The student, now accepted into the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, had applied through official channels and should not face public condemnation, Dr. Joseph said. He urged MPs to ensure facts are confirmed before addressing the nation or raising sensitive matters.

The Minister also cautioned that online bullying can have serious emotional consequences, particularly for young citizens working to contribute to national service.

Dr. Joseph appealed to the public to avoid sharing posts that may harm reputations and to recognise that false information can have real-world repercussions.

The controversy has sparked conversations about accountability, ethical leadership, and the responsibility of political figures in handling sensitive topics in Papua New Guinea.
