Divine Word University in PNG Expands Student Facilities
Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea has strengthened its commitment to quality education with the opening of two new facilities at its St Benedict Wewak Campus this week. The university unveiled the projects during a formal ceremony attended by government leaders and the academic community.
The developments, valued at K1.24 million, include a Nursing Simulation Laboratory extension and a Male Student Recreational Hall, funded through the National Government’s Public Investment Program.
Speaking at the event, Department of National Planning and Monitoring Secretary Koney Samuel said Divine Word University continues to play a key role in shaping the country’s future workforce. He noted that government policies such as the Medium-Term Development Plan IV are focused on equipping students with practical skills and knowledge.
Mr Samuel encouraged students to make full use of the new facilities, especially the simulation equipment, stressing that it represents a long-term investment in education.

East Sepik Governor Allan Bird praised Divine Word University for maintaining high standards in training, particularly in the health sector, where Papua New Guinea faces a growing demand for skilled professionals.
He urged students to take responsibility for the new infrastructure and reaffirmed his support for the university’s continued growth in the Sepik region.
DWU President Professor Fr Philip Gibbs said the projects reflect the institution’s vision of developing competent and compassionate graduates. He highlighted the importance of practical training in nursing education.
He also emphasised the role of student welfare facilities in promoting personal development, stating, “these facilities reflect DWU’s vision to be a foremost university in the Catholic tradition, promoting true integral human development in Papua New Guinea and beyond.”
